The Birmingham school said Smartt stepped back on 25 April, missing the final five regular-season games and conference tournament as complaints from players and parents mounted.
Reported allegations include punching a player twice, racial remarks, withholding meal money, dangerous workouts and an inappropriate relationship with a student-athlete; athletic director Mark Ingram reportedly met parents.
UAB says it is investigating to ensure a safe environment for athletes, while Smartt has not publicly responded and the season has now ended.
