The Lynnwood, Washington, councilwoman had criticised the park’s 27 US flags and said a pride flag felt more relatable to her as an immigrant and queer woman.
After online backlash, Mata said she sincerely regretted how she expressed herself and said the US flag represents veterans’ sacrifices, military families and the promise that drew immigrants like her.
She said her comments were personal, not a formal policy proposal, and that any changes to public spaces would require a public process with community input in diverse Lynnwood.
