Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ynonne Mewengkang said two Iranian-flagged crude tankers were reported using the route east of Bali as an alternative to the more closely watched Malacca Strait.
Jakarta said the ships were exercising innocent passage under the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and has taken no direct action against them.
The comments came as US Central Command said forces had redirected 51 vessels by May 5 in a wider campaign targeting Iranian shipping and port activity, with more ships reportedly turned back daily.
