Patty Gill, 52, and husband Shane, 57, left a 3,500-square-foot San Antonio home five years ago and say they have saved more than $100,000.
They cited a $2,000 monthly mortgage, summer power bills above $400 and constant repairs, while traveling to every US state and keeping Texas as their legal home base.
The shift reflects wider Gen X retirement strain: only 16% say they have saved enough, amid 401(k)-era insecurity, inflation, volatile markets and caring for ageing parents.
