A special meeting is set for 5pm Friday after Mayor Ron Shinnick posted that the department was dissolved at 8:30am Wednesday and all personnel terminated.
Whitfield County Sheriff's Office said it immediately took over law enforcement in the north Georgia town, with Sheriff Darren Pierce saying residents should see no change in emergency response times.
The move follows recent disputes over town leadership, payroll and records access, while the police department had been rebuilding after a 2022 fire damaged its facilities.
