Former chief Greg Fowler said all 14 officers were dismissed on Wednesday morning, and Whitfield County Sheriff's Office took over policing in the north Georgia town.
Fowler said Mayor Ron Shinnick blamed a department Facebook post about recent town events, though the post was unavailable and the mayor did not respond to requests for comment.
The move follows a dispute over the mayor's wife, former clerk Pam Shinnick, and contradicted assurances on 30 April that no officers would lose their jobs; an emergency meeting is set for Friday.
