Shares fell 12% premarket after the Hampton, New Hampshire chain lowered adjusted earnings, revenue and same-club sales outlooks despite first-quarter revenue rising 22% to $337.2 million.
The company now expects adjusted earnings to fall about 2%, revenue growth of about 7% and same-club sales growth of 1%, versus earlier targets for growth across all three measures.
Chief executive Colleen Keating blamed weak New Year signups and other headwinds, saying Planet Fitness will adjust marketing and pause a Black Card membership price increase; it ended the quarter with 2,909 gyms.
