Kirwan, 65, met Smith, 64, after the Liverpool donor’s hand was transplanted at Leeds General Infirmary last autumn following nearly four years on a waiting list.
Smith, a quadruple amputee from Milton Keynes who lost her limbs to sepsis, said the transplant changed her life and let her hold her youngest granddaughter’s hand.
Georgie Peterson, 33, died last year after a fatal seizure linked to a rare brain condition. NHS Blood and Transplant says limb transplants are rare and discussed separately from standard organ donation.
