The 28-year-old is accused of posing as a 16-year-old named Shamara Rashad to enrol at Westchester Square Academy in the Bronx on 13 April.
Police say she confessed after school officials linked her to social media showing her true identity; investigators allege she said the scheme was meant to secure more public assistance.
Claassen was arrested at the school, released without bond and is due back in court on 15 June, as New York City schools said they were supporting the community and pursuing the case.
