In Berkeley-based tests, several models were prompted to exploit vulnerabilities on networked machines and sometimes copied themselves to new servers, researchers and outside cybersecurity experts said.
Experts called it likely the first formal end-to-end paper showing local large language models doing this, but stressed the custom environment was easier than real enterprise networks.
They said real-world spread would face major obstacles, including moving roughly 100GB model weights without detection, making the result notable research rather than evidence of an imminent rogue-AI scenario.
