Garland police said the attack happened near Highway 66 and Dairy Road, with most of the family of eight inside the car and no relatives injured.
Investigators said the suspect had crashed into two vehicles and tried to force his way into several others before a struggle of nearly a minute ended in the shooting.
Police said no weapon was found on the suspect, charges are not expected against the father because it appeared to be self-defence, and efforts to identify the dead man continue.
