ECB says euro zone equity markets remain fragmented

In Frankfurt, the bank said cross-border equity investment within the bloc has fallen to historically low levels, even as lending, bond holdings and market spreads have risen above long-term averages since 2022.
The report said fragmented supervision, tax systems and market infrastructure deter cross-border investment, while households keep much of their savings in bank deposits rather than equities.
The ECB backed European Commission proposals including tax simplification, pension reform and stronger EU-level oversight, but said deeper changes to national corporate and securities laws are still needed.
