The longtime Ole Miss management professor will assume the role on 1 July, pending approval by the state higher education board, succeeding retired dean Ken Cyree.
University leaders said Gentry emerged from a national search because of his record building entrepreneurship, study-abroad and general business programmes and his emphasis on experiential learning and industry ties.
Since 2014, the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship he helped lead has advised more than 1,000 students, supported 80 startups and awarded over $744,000 in prizes and scholarships.
