At his 6 May general audience in St Peter's Square, he said the Church journeys toward the heavenly homeland and must reject whatever wounds human life.
Leo said the Church serves God's kingdom without identifying fully with it, and must stand with the poor, exploited, victims of violence and war, and all who suffer.
He urged continual conversion and reform of Church institutions, stressing they are not absolute, and highlighted communion between living Christians and the dead through prayer, liturgy and union with Christ.
