State Police said the 30-year-old was struck at 2:04 a.m. in Lynnfield by a Jeep driving south in northbound lanes after a 911 call.
The other driver also died, and Colonel Geoffrey Noble said Trainor, heading home after his shift, likely prevented further crashes by responding.
Trainor, a Salem native who joined the force in 2023, was honoured in a Boston procession as Essex County prosecutors investigated why the driver was on the wrong side.
