The April 23 image captured the Kamchatka volcano as KVERT said its explosive-extrusive eruption continued with powerful gas-steam activity and a lava dome growing in recent months.

In April 2026, Shiveluch volcano experienced persistent magma extrusion that fueled rapid lava dome growth, especially on the northwestern flank, raising the dome to 2,400 meters. Earlier in February, powerful explosions sent ash plumes soaring above 9 km, triggering multiple rapid escalations of the Aviation Color Code to Red and disrupting trans-Pacific flights. The 2023 eruption caused devastating pyroclastic flows that melted snow, triggering lahars which damaged ecosystems and infrastructure, including heavy ashfall that closed a regional airport.
