Shivelyuch volcano shows fresh activity and melting snow in Landsat 9 image

  • The April 23 image captured the Kamchatka volcano as KVERT said its explosive-extrusive eruption continued with powerful gas-steam activity and a lava dome growing in recent months.
  • Thermal anomalies, hot avalanches, debris flows and warm channels around the caldera indicate repeated dome growth and collapse, which can unleash pyroclastic block-and-ash flows that melt snow for months or years.
  • Shivelyuch, the peninsula's northernmost active volcano, remains scarred by a major April 2023 eruption whose deposits, forest damage and flow channels are still visible and may still retain heat.
With AI-driven monitoring and near-daily eruptions, how close are we to reliably predicting Shiveluch’s next major event—and what are the risks if we can't?
How do modern satellite and neural network tools change the way aviation and local communities respond to volcanic threats like Shiveluch?

Shiveluch Volcano April 2026: Rapid Dome Expansion, Thermal Anomalies, and Rising Pyroclastic Flow Risks

Overview

In April 2026, Shiveluch volcano experienced persistent magma extrusion that fueled rapid lava dome growth, especially on the northwestern flank, raising the dome to 2,400 meters. This activity generated continuous thermal anomalies, prompting KVERT to maintain a high aviation alert. Earlier in February, powerful explosions sent ash plumes soaring above 9 km, triggering multiple rapid escalations of the Aviation Color Code to Red and disrupting trans-Pacific flights. The 2023 eruption caused devastating pyroclastic flows that melted snow, triggering lahars which damaged ecosystems and infrastructure, including heavy ashfall that closed a regional airport. Continuous monitoring by KVERT using seismic and satellite data remains vital to track Shiveluch’s dynamic activity and mitigate risks to aviation and nearby communities.
