The official Assassin's Creed X account said the image came from a private playtest but was heavily altered, probably with AI, after it surfaced online on Tuesday.
xj0nathan denied fabricating it, saying he only changed colours to remove a watermark, then posted what he described as the original image, which appeared very similar.
The dispute follows his report that an April 30 playtest drew poor feedback and that the multiplayer spin-off, developed at Ubisoft Montreal, could slip beyond 2026 or be cancelled.
