The Jackson session will consider electoral legislation at the site of Mississippi's 1890 Constitutional Convention, which imposed voting restrictions that particularly harmed Black residents.
Nelson said using the building sends a troubling message and revives historical trauma, even while acknowledging lawmakers need an alternative venue during construction at the current state Capitol.
He said he will still attend and represent his district, arguing places where Mississippi conducts public business should reflect a united state rather than a divided past.
