Archbishop Inácio Saúre said the late-April assault in Pemba diocese burned the parish church, missionaries’ homes and a small school at the mission founded in 1946.
He said attackers spread hatred against Christians, urged an end to religious extremism and Islamophobia, and called Muslims “our dearly beloved brothers” in a plea for coexistence.
The attack comes amid Cabo Delgado’s insurgency since 2017, which has displaced hundreds of thousands and disrupted education, healthcare and worship, as Catholic youth voiced support for affected communities.
