EU tightens migration controls as new asylum rules take effect in June

Migration commissioner Magnus Brunner said in Washington return rates have risen from about 20% to nearly 30%, while 750 of 30,000 screened people were flagged as security threats.
The pact will shift more processing to external borders, require biometric and security checks, speed asylum decisions within weeks and fast-track deportations, including wider use of safe third countries.
The tougher approach follows years of low deportation enforcement, political pressure and security concerns, with the EU also citing Russian and Belarusian efforts to weaponise migration at the bloc's borders.
