Ministers said initial work will examine costs, socio-economic benefits and chances of success for hosting the Games again after London 2012, which cost £8.8bn.
They are also considering support for UK bids for golf's Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup in the 2030s, under a new sporting events framework.
