At Comerica Park, the Tigers left-hander drilled Story high with a 94mph first pitch after back-to-back Boston homers, and Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy called it intentional and "weak".
Valdez denied intent and said the ejection was unfair without a warning, while Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said he understood the frustration and optics of the incident.
Boston won 10-3 after tagging Valdez for 10 runs, seven earned, in three innings, and MLB could suspend him, a further blow to Detroit's injury-hit rotation.
