Stats NZ said 163,000 people were unemployed, down from 165,000 in December, while underutilisation was unchanged at 12.9%.
Annual wage inflation was 2%, with average ordinary hourly earnings at NZ$44.12 and average weekly earnings for full-time equivalent employees rising to NZ$1,716 from NZ$1,666.
The data covered only to late March, so it captured only part of the fallout from the Iran war and global fuel crisis; economists had expected unemployment to stay near the previous quarter's near-decade high.
