A judge said the 33-year-old German man should be hospitalised after Monday's attack in a central Leipzig pedestrian area that killed two people and seriously injured at least three.
Prosecutors say the rampage was deliberate and that he wanted to kill and seriously injure as many people as possible, but found no political or religious motive.
Authorities said the suspect had received voluntary treatment at a specialist psychiatric hospital from April 17 to 29 and is being investigated for double murder and multiple attempted murders.
