Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said the mission, called Project Freedom, escorts commercial shipping through the strait and will not enter Iranian waters or airspace.
He described it as defensive, limited and temporary, aimed at protecting merchant vessels as fighting has largely closed the waterway.
The US says its Iran conflict, Operation Epic Fury, ended with an April 7 ceasefire, though thousands of US troops remain in the region and Iranian ports are still blockaded.
