GPT-5.5 Launch in May 2026: Dual-Mode AI Powers Complex Workflows Amid Hallucination Challenges and Rising Costs
Overview
In May 2026, OpenAI launched GPT-5.5, a groundbreaking AI model featuring a dual-mode system that adapts to task complexity, enabling fast responses for simple queries and deep reasoning for complex problems. This advancement boosts efficiency and accelerates workflows in coding, research, and data analysis. However, despite claimed improvements in accuracy, independent tests reveal persistent hallucination issues, especially without external tools, making agentic workflows essential for reliability. The model’s enhanced capabilities come with higher costs, particularly for complex tasks, positioning GPT-5.5 as a powerful but premium tool aimed at enterprise users. The AI landscape is shifting toward multi-model strategies, balancing autonomy, reliability, and cost for diverse professional needs.
