The two-month-old cat, found near death in Fort Worth on 31 March, is now with 72-year-old Humane Society volunteer Leah Owens after drawing hundreds of adoption inquiries.
Staff said Elmer survived after canola oil baths, massages and weeks of treatment removed hardened adhesive that had restricted his breathing and movement.
Owens said Elmer brought comfort after her husband died of multiple myeloma in October, while the kitten, now 2.5 pounds, has become playful and affectionate.
