Co-written with former colleague Janie Nitze, "Heroes of 1776" arrives this month before the US 250th anniversary, as Gorsuch cites just 13% eighth-grade history proficiency and 22% civics proficiency.
The book recounts famous founders and lesser-known patriots, including teenage soldier Joseph Plum Martin and spy Emily Geiger, to show the personal risks behind independence, self-governance and separation of powers.
Gorsuch said the Declaration era deeply divided colonists and families, and he hopes the illustrated book helps children and adults connect with the nation's history as civic knowledge declines.
