The Minocqua Brewing Company owner said he needs 2,000 signatures by 1 June to reach November's ballot after FBI and Secret Service questioning over a post offering free beer on Donald Trump's death.
Bangstad said the investigation and what he called a lack of backing from Wisconsin Democrats, including criticism from party figures, pushed him to enter the crowded Democratic primary.
He previously ran for Congress and the state assembly, and his brewery is known for progressive branding and a SuperPAC targeting Republicans linked to 2020 election falsehoods and 6 January.
