Speaking three weeks before the CBS programme's 21 May finale, Colbert said a 2015 export crash left the first episode stuck about 90 seconds into his monologue.
He recalled fearing he would have "the shortest late-night career" until editor Jason Baker bypassed the normal process and fed the show directly from his Avid computer to broadcast.
The anecdote comes as Colbert prepares to end The Late Show after CBS parent Paramount said the cancellation was for financial reasons, amid scrutiny following his clashes with President Donald Trump.
