  • Gina P. Sierra of the National University of Colombia classified the 66-foot cloud-forest tree from Colombia and northern Peru after analysing herbarium specimens and recent field collections.
  • Genetic comparisons across 292 genes from 45 nightshade species placed Daturodendron absconditum as sister to other Datureae, while chemical screening found medically important tropane alkaloids in its leaves.
  • Known from only a few isolated populations at 4,400 to 6,900 feet, the species is currently Data Deficient, though researchers warn habitat pressure near some Colombian sites could warrant higher threat status.
A new reserve was just created for this rare tree. Is it enough to save it from extinction?
What did local communities know about this 66-foot-tall tree's powerful secrets before its 'discovery'?
