Gina P. Sierra of the National University of Colombia classified the 66-foot cloud-forest tree from Colombia and northern Peru after analysing herbarium specimens and recent field collections.
Genetic comparisons across 292 genes from 45 nightshade species placed Daturodendron absconditum as sister to other Datureae, while chemical screening found medically important tropane alkaloids in its leaves.
Known from only a few isolated populations at 4,400 to 6,900 feet, the species is currently Data Deficient, though researchers warn habitat pressure near some Colombian sites could warrant higher threat status.
A new reserve was just created for this rare tree. Is it enough to save it from extinction?
What did local communities know about this 66-foot-tall tree's powerful secrets before its 'discovery'?
