April registrations rose 24.0% to 149,247, with battery electric vehicles up 59.1% year on year to 2,012,758 total and a 26.2% monthly market share.
Electrified vehicles made up 53.2% of sales, while plug-in hybrids and hybrids gained 46.4% and 18.8% respectively after last year's tax-driven purchase pull-forward depressed April demand.
SMMT said year-to-date BEV share of 23.1% remains below the 33% mandate target, cut its 2026 BEV forecast to 26.8%, and warned high costs and Iran conflict uncertainty could slow demand.
