In 45 healthy adults aged 22 to 70, MRI scans showed the association was stronger in older people and in those with higher monthly and lifetime drinking.
Researchers reported reduced perfusion in frontal and temporal lobes involved in thinking, memory and language, while older adults with higher lifetime intake also showed thinner cortices.
Published in Alcohol, the small observational study does not change current drinking guidelines, but authors and outside clinicians said it adds to evidence that low-risk drinking may still carry brain risks.
