In patch notes posted Friday, AMD's Harry Wentland said the update should benefit the upcoming Steam Machine and bring higher-bandwidth HDMI support to Linux users.
FRL enables higher resolutions, dynamic HDR and Variable Refresh Rate beyond HDMI 2.0's TMDS limits, though Display Stream Compression support is still being tested and will follow later.
AMD said the current patches represent only part of HDMI 2.1 compliance, with a full compliance run still in progress after long-standing licensing and open-source development hurdles.

As AMD overcomes HDMI's licensing hurdles for Linux, could this set a precedent for other proprietary technologies in open source?
