FDNY Assistant Chief David Simms said Monday the blaze started in an electrical room, damaged fourth-floor and backstage lighting areas, and caused some water damage; one firefighter had minor injuries.
ATG Entertainment said everyone was evacuated safely, but it remains unclear how long the 1,108-seat Broadway venue will be closed for repairs and whether Tuesday's performance can proceed.
The cause is still under investigation after firefighters struggled through catwalks and rigging to contain the deep-seated fire at the 1925 theatre, home to the musical since 2011.
