Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon said the inquiry covers pre-K to 12th-grade instruction, name and pronoun policies, gender-identity clubs, bathrooms, locker rooms and girls' sports teams.
The department will assess whether federally funded districts denied parents notice or opt-outs for sexual orientation and gender ideology lessons and whether any practices breach Title IX or Supreme Court parental-rights precedent.
Federal funding could be at risk if violations are found. The move expands scrutiny of Illinois education policy after a previous Title IX investigation involving the state board and Chicago Public Schools.
