Hookstead said his wife exchanged several thousand dollars on arrival in Dublin on 22 April and received about €3,000 back after fees and a poor rate.
He described airport currency exchange counters as effectively a scam, saying the loss amounted to a "small fortune", though reserve cash and cards meant the trip could continue.
The complaint appeared in a first-person account of a wider Europe trip covering Ireland and France, including illness in Dublin, visits to Normandy and criticism of parts of Paris.
