The 11,500-square-foot space replaces the institute’s former 4,300-square-foot basement galleries at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, with Beyoncé joining Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams and Anna Wintour as co-chairs.
The new galleries, created in the former gift shop by the Great Hall, give fashion a prominent permanent home and allow the next Costume Institute exhibition to run for nine months.
The gala also marks a symbolic shift for an institute long treated as secondary within the Met; Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos are honorary chairs and key funders.
