On CBS on Sunday, Hassett said Spirit shut on Saturday after two Chapter 11 filings and blamed failed management, not the fuel shock.
He said rival airlines hedged jet-fuel purchases and remain healthy, though higher costs could dent profits for a quarter or so.
Hassett said a previously discussed $500 million rescue was unworkable because creditors were moving to liquidate Spirit after the blocked JetBlue merger left it on the ropes.
