The 25-year-old returned from a rehab stint at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after October left shoulder surgery, batting .275 with one homer and six RBIs in 13 minor league games.
Manager Aaron Boone said the decision was complicated because Jose Caballero has seized the starting job, hitting .259 with four homers, 12 RBIs and 13 stolen bases.
If Volpe stays in the minors for at least 20 days, his free agency would be pushed back a year to after 2029. The 2023 Gold Glove winner hit .212 last season.
