At Turn 1 in Miami, polesitter Kimi Antonelli held second after locking up, while Max Verstappen spun and dropped down the order.
The lead change came after a three-wide fight between the Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull on the opening lap, leaving Verstappen facing a difficult recovery bid.
Elsewhere, Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari made brief contact with Alpine's Franco Colapinto before Hamilton regained the place by the end of the lap.
