The blast happened around 8pm on Saturday at a youth camp in St Oswald bei Freistadt, Upper Austria, injuring children aged 10 to 14.
Police said the object was likely from World War Two, and Kepler University Hospital in Linz treated the children for minor injuries before discharging them the same day.
Officers later found a second wartime relic near another firepit, prompting bomb disposal work and a local closure until Monday as investigators examined the site.
