Dr Anuj Chawla of Fortis Gurugram said each foot has 26 bones and more than 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments, making subtle changes important warning signs.
He said coldness, numbness, cracked heels, swelling and nail changes can indicate poor circulation, nerve damage, dehydration, thyroid imbalance, fungal infection, or heart, kidney and liver stress.
In diabetes, unnoticed injuries, infections and non-healing ulcers can progress to gangrene and amputation; an Indian Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism study says such foot complications are a leading cause of hospitalisation in India.
