In a Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience study, Rodney Schmaltz's team tested 36 volunteers and found unheard low-frequency sound raised cortisol and worsened mood.
Participants could not tell when infrasound was present, yet became more irritated and rated both calming and unsettling music as sadder during exposure.
The researchers say old boilers, pipes and plumbing may generate such vibrations in supposedly haunted buildings, though more testing is needed and infrasound alone would not explain apparitions.
