In its first revision in 17 years, ACSM reviewed 136 systematic reviews covering more than 30,000 people and said training major muscle groups at least twice weekly matters most.
The guidance says equipment and setting matter less than regular, challenging effort, with barbells, bands, bodyweight and home routines all able to improve strength, muscle growth and physical function.
Experts cited in the report recommend beginners learn technique first, use simple full-body sessions, progress gradually, and support gains with sleep and adequate protein intake.
