Atlanta-based Delta says weather and air traffic control also hurt operations, but pilots say staffing-driven cancellations are up tenfold and now account for 35% of disruptions.
Delta's March on-time rate fell to 68%, behind United and Southwest, according to Cirium, as executives and the pilots' union traded blame over hiring, scheduling, reserves and contract-related operational changes.
The airline, with about 17,000 pilots, says hiring accelerated and reserve levels are rising, but union leaders warn summer travel could strain crews further after last year's technology, staffing and scheduling problems.
