Brazil's federal government said Recife, Olinda, Conde, Joao Pessoa and Campina Grande were among the hardest hit, with about 1,500 displaced in Pernambuco and 1,800 in Paraiba.
Flooding and landslides followed 48 hours of rain, prompting 22 alerts from the National Center for Risk and Disaster Management and a maximum operational alert for the region.
Authorities said rainfall had eased and conditions were improving, but vigilance remained necessary on Saturday as President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva offered federal support to local authorities.
