Ukraine said it downed 142 drones overnight on 1-2 May, while 17 hit 12 locations and debris fell at two sites.
Officials reported damage to civilian infrastructure in Kharkiv Oblast, port facilities in Odesa Oblast and an energy facility in Mykolaiv, with other targets hit in Dnipropetrovsk, Sumy and Kharkiv city.
The strikes came as ISW said Russian territorial gains slowed sharply, with a net loss of 116 sq km in April, while Ukraine continued strikes on Russian military assets in Crimea and occupied regions.

Ukraine Under Siege: The Impact of Russia’s Mass Drone Attacks and the Battle to Sustain Air Defenses
Overview
In early May 2026, Russia launched a massive drone attack on Ukraine, deploying 210 drones targeting energy, infrastructure, and civilian areas. Despite Ukraine's layered air defenses and advanced AI-enabled interceptor drones achieving an 87% interception rate, some drones caused casualties and significant damage to ports, railways, and homes. Russia's strategy focuses on overwhelming defenses to drain Ukraine's resources, disrupt its economy, and impose psychological strain. Ukraine counters with rapid innovation and international support but faces resource and training challenges. Meanwhile, Ukraine's own drone strikes have severely reduced Russia's oil export capacity, intensifying the economic and humanitarian toll on both sides amid a complex geopolitical landscape.
