At the University of South Florida's St Petersburg campus, 60 units responded, no injuries were reported, and Fire Chief Michael Lewis said crews would remain overnight.
Lewis said hazardous chemicals inside the building must be assessed and the lab is likely a total loss, though no classrooms were damaged and classes should resume Monday.
The cause remains unknown as investigators continue examining the blaze, while students and staff had been evacuated safely during the firefighting operation.
